New Initiatives Result in Massive Reduction in Paper & Energy Consumption

Fall River, Mass.— Subsequent to their expansion to Fall River, Displays2go has doubled down on restructuring operational goals. Most recently, they’ve strengthened their approach to Environmental Sustainability — a part of their underlying Corporate Responsibility Program. In conjunction with a heightened new initiative to offset their carbon footprint, they’ve set their scope on vastly reducing the consumption of paper goods, large scale recycling objectives and updating their nearly 500,000 sq. ft facility to energy efficient lighting and systems.

Reducing/Rethinking Waste Consumption

Solidifying a commitment to environmental sustainability, the company launched feet-first into the concept of digital transformation. A notion which facilitates paperless solutions like meetings presented over large screens and company issued laptops in the place of sharing information over printed handouts. Employees share virtually all documents and collaborative materials electronically. Respectively, the company has reduced their average monthly bulk paper purchases from 22 parcels per month in 2016 to just 2 in 2017.

In other efforts, Displays2go’s contact center underwent stringent changes to their ordering process that culminated in an entirely paperless system. “We were moving away from approving artwork proposals on paper,” said Karen Pelletier, Contact Center Operations Manager. “Once the new ERP system was in place, we were able to rework our system for custom artwork approvals. Our aim was to better manage tasks and automate our operations. As a result, the art process was made fully electronic and soon after, the entire contact center was able to follow suit. It was a win-win on all accounts.” Still, perhaps the most substantial byproduct of Displays2go’s paperless agenda was the tremendous decrease in the consumption of ink toner; especially when one considers the significant toll producing even one ink cartridge can have on the environment.

Furthermore, the company was able to secure a relationship with a local waste disposal company who accommodates “single stream recycling” on a commercial level. This process allows for all manner of recyclables to be mixed; resulting in increased employee participation with the program and the benefit of easier disposal. Approximately 90% of the total waste from Displays2go will now be recycled. The organization and the vendors they work with are also well established in a carbon neutral program which focuses on sustainable packaging and offsetting the Co2 produced in shipping. All hazardous waste produced by Displays2go is disposed of per proper Federal and State guidelines.

Minimizing Energy Consumption

Contiguous with an ongoing effort to cut energy consumption and costs, 97% of Displays2go’s new facility has been converted to energy saving LED lighting. The building previously operated primarily under fluorescent lights. The organization's rapid expansion has progressed beyond the original warehouse sq. footage secured in initial procurement. Each time warehouse space increases, lighting and equipment within that area are promptly updated to meet rigid energy standards. So far, Displays2go has reduced their overall energy consumption by 40%.

Solar Standards

“One of the contributing draws to the new facility was the existing solar program,” said Bob Black, Displays2go’s Director of Manufacturing & Facilities. The building’s rooftop is currently home to over 300,000 sq ft of solar panels. A system which produces 3,600,000 kWh of electricity annually - enough to power 720 standard sized houses.

Of the transformation at it’s core, Black goes on to say “We’re capitalizing on the momentum of the move right now. Our aim is to update our processes and operations on a continual basis to ensure that we both meet and exceed the best energy and environmental practices for a sustainable, healthy business and world.”
